You know how many people want hair and makeup.
But how many artists do you actually need?
It’s one of the most important questions when planning your wedding morning, especially if you have a larger bridal party or a firm time everyone needs to be ready.
Because booking enough appointments is only half of the equation.
You also need enough artists to complete those appointments within your available getting-ready window.
At The Red Stiletto, our team provides hair and makeup for more than 300 weddings each year. And one thing we’ve learned is that a successful wedding morning isn’t about starting as early as humanly possible.
It’s about staffing the morning correctly from the beginning.
When determining how many hair and makeup artists you need, your ceremony time isn’t actually the most important number.
Your ready time is.
If your ceremony begins at 4:00 PM, that doesn’t necessarily mean hair and makeup can continue until 3:30.
You may need to be dressed by 1:30 for photos. Your photographer may want detail shots before that. You may be doing a first look, wedding-party portraits or traveling to another location.
That means your beauty team may need everyone completely finished hours before the ceremony begins.
Once we know your actual ready time, we can work backward to determine how much time we have and how many artists are needed.
At The Red Stiletto, we generally plan approximately 60 minutes per hair service and 60 minutes per makeup service.
That doesn’t mean a wedding party of eight needs eight hours to get ready.
It means the number of artists assigned to your wedding matters.
Instead of trying to squeeze an entire wedding party through one hair artist and one makeup artist, we build a team around the number of services and the available timeline.
For larger parties, that may mean multiple hair artists, multiple makeup artists and assistants working together.
The goal isn’t to make everyone get up earlier.
The goal is to create enough capacity to get everyone ready on time.
Imagine you have eight people receiving hair and eight receiving makeup.
That’s 16 individual services.
Trying to complete those services with a very small team can mean an extremely early start, a long morning and very little room for anything unexpected.
Add more appropriately staffed artists, and suddenly those services can happen simultaneously.
That’s one of the reasons our wedding teams are often made up of multiple specialists.
Our artists are departmentalized, meaning your hair artists specialize in hair and your makeup artists specialize in makeup. For larger weddings, we can build a team around exactly what the morning requires.
A timeline that only works if every single service takes exactly the expected amount of time isn’t much of a timeline.
Someone will need to find her earrings.
Someone will leave her dress upstairs.
Someone will be answering a phone call from the florist.
And someone will inevitably disappear when it’s time to sit down.
We know this because we’ve seen hundreds of wedding mornings.
Professional timeline planning accounts for the fact that a wedding morning involves actual people, not appointments moving perfectly through a spreadsheet.
Your beauty schedule needs structure, but it also needs enough staffing and efficiency to keep the entire morning moving.
Couples sometimes assume that bringing in more artists will make the getting-ready space feel busier.
With an experienced team, the opposite can be true.

A properly staffed team can shorten the overall getting-ready window, prevent backups and keep the morning from revolving around who needs to be in which chair next.
At The Red Stiletto, we use a team-based system rather than assigning everyone a rigid individual appointment time.
Everyone receiving services arrives ready at the designated start time, and our team moves the group through hair and makeup together.
This gives us flexibility throughout the morning while still keeping the final ready time front and center.
There isn’t one universal artist-to-client ratio that works for every wedding.
The right number depends on:
This is why we don’t believe the bride should have to figure out the staffing herself.
That’s our job.
When you book The Red Stiletto, we look at the number of services you need and the amount of time available and determine the team necessary to execute it.
Instead of only asking:
“Can you accommodate this many people?”
Ask:
“How will you staff this many people so everyone is finished by our required ready time?”
Those are two very different questions.
A company may technically be able to book 15 hair appointments and 15 makeup appointments.
But who is actually showing up on the wedding day to perform them?
How long will the services take?
How early will you need to start?
What happens if the timeline changes?
And does the company already have a team large enough to adjust?
When you’re comparing wedding hair and makeup companies, you’re not just comparing portfolios and pricing.
You’re comparing their ability to execute your wedding morning.
You shouldn’t have to choose between having everyone receive professional hair and makeup and starting your wedding morning at an unreasonable hour.
With the right team structure, even large wedding parties can have an organized, enjoyable getting-ready experience.
The Red Stiletto provides on-location bridal hair and makeup with a large employee-based team serving weddings throughout the Midwest and across the country.
From intimate wedding parties to groups of 20 or more, we build the beauty team around the wedding timeline so that when it’s time to get dressed, take photos and walk down the aisle, you’re ready.
