Not every bridal beauty “team” is actually a team.

In many freelance-based beauty companies, the artists who arrive on your wedding day may not be employees of the company you booked. They may be independent artists brought in specifically to fill the services for your wedding.

That doesn’t automatically mean those artists aren’t talented. Many freelance artists are incredibly skilled.

But it does mean you should understand exactly who you’re hiring and how that company operates before signing a contract.

Because when it comes to your wedding day, talent is only one part of the equation.

A Booking Doesn’t Always Mean an Artist Has Been Assigned

This is something many couples would never think to ask.

Some bridal beauty companies accept weddings first and staff them later.

Once the wedding is booked, they may reach out to their network of independent artists to find people available to fulfill those services.

From the couple’s perspective, everything appears confirmed.

But behind the scenes, the actual artists who will provide the services may not yet be determined.

That’s why one of the best questions you can ask before booking is:

“When I sign my contract, are the artists for my wedding already part of your established team?”

The answer tells you a lot about what you’re actually booking.

Working Together Matters

Wedding mornings move differently than appointments in a salon.

There are multiple services happening simultaneously. People are moving in and out of chairs. Photographers and planners are arriving. Someone is looking for earrings. Someone else is steaming a dress.

Your beauty team needs to know how to work together without the bride having to manage them.

When artists regularly work within the same company, they understand the process.

They know what is expected of them.

They know how services should be performed.

They know how to communicate with one another.

And they know how to adjust when something unexpected happens.

Your wedding morning isn’t the ideal time for a group of artists to figure out how to work together.

Consistency Is Bigger Than Artistic Style

One of the challenges of hiring multiple independent artists is consistency.

Every artist naturally develops their own techniques, preferred products, service times and standards.

That can work beautifully when you’re booking one artist for one person.

But a wedding with multiple artists and multiple services requires something different.

You want each person in your wedding party to receive a consistent level of service regardless of whose chair they sit in.

This may be one of the most important questions you can ask a potential beauty company:

What happens if my artist gets sick, has an emergency or becomes unavailable?

No company can promise that emergencies will never happen.

What matters is whether the company has a system for handling them when they do.

If you’ve booked an individual artist and that person becomes unavailable, the options may be limited.

A larger established team has something incredibly valuable on a wedding day: depth.

There are other trained professionals within the company who understand the same expectations and systems.

That’s not something you’ll necessarily see in an Instagram portfolio.

But it’s something you’ll be very glad exists if you ever need it.

Ask Who Is Actually Showing Up

Before booking wedding hair and makeup, don’t be afraid to ask how the company staffs its weddings.

Some helpful questions include:

• Are your artists employees or independent contractors?
• Do your artists regularly work together?
• Are artists assigned before or after weddings are booked?
• Does everyone follow the same service standards and protocols?
• What happens if an assigned artist becomes unavailable?
• Who is responsible for finding a replacement?
• Does the company have backup artists available?

There isn’t necessarily one answer that every couple must require.

The important thing is knowing what you’re purchasing.

A Beautiful Portfolio Doesn’t Show You the Entire Business

Instagram can show you beautiful hair.

It can show you beautiful makeup.

It can show you stunning brides and incredible wedding photography.

What it can’t always show you is the infrastructure behind the company.

It doesn’t show you how artists are trained.

It doesn’t show you how weddings are staffed.

It doesn’t show you what happens when someone calls in sick.

It doesn’t show you whether the artists have ever worked together before.

And it doesn’t show you who is ultimately responsible for making sure the services you booked are actually delivered.

Those things may not be as exciting as choosing your bridal hairstyle.

But they’re incredibly important.
